Making the transition from doing work yourself to managing others can feel overwhelming. Learning to Manage is designed to help minimize the stress and walk you through the process of management by targeting five specific areas. You’ll learn to successfully handle staff, projects, performance, conflict, and even yourself as you evaluate and continuously improve your effectiveness as a manager.

No doubt, taking on a managerial role for the first time can be hard. You may be supervising former colleagues or getting to know an entirely new organization and set of employees. You’ll feel pressure from below and above. So how do you set yourself up for success? It can be helpful to think about effective and ineffective managers you have encountered in your career.

Successful completion of this course will increase your ability to:

• Understand how to make the transition into management.

• Avoid the common pitfalls that derail new managers.

• Discover how to communicate effectively up and down your organization.

• Explore ways to effectively delegate work and encourage employee development.

• Identify how to manage task-related and interpersonal crises.

• Develop self-awareness and determine the support you need to successfully manage employees.

• Tasks and obligations of a manager.

• Knowing what traits and behaviors employees value most in a manager.

• The seven common pitfalls of management and best practices for avoiding them.

• How to develop solid relationships with employees.

• Communicating effectively with employees and upper management including being aware of the effects of body language.

• Identifying distracting listening habits and learning how to listen attentively.

• Establishing objectives and measurements of success.

• What to consider when prioritizing work and which tasks to delegate.

• Exploring ways to help employees grow in both the short- and long-term.

• Recognizing symptoms that you’re not dealing with problems effectively.

• Encouraging employees to resolve both task-related and interpersonal problems themselves.

• Where and how to gain the support you need to be successful.

M odule 2 – Peer Today, Boss Tomorrow

How You Will Benefit

In addition to dramatic change, new managers frequently struggle to balance their old coworker relationships with their new management responsibilities. Designed to help participants make a successful transition from “coworker” to “manager” or “supervisor,” Peer Today, Boss Tomorrow presents four proven strategies that will help new supervisors navigate changing relationships and prepare for the most difficult situations they’re likely to encounter as they assume their new role.

Through the four strategies presented and applied in this program, participants will have the opportunity to learn:

What it means to accept the responsibilities of their new role.

How to exercise their abilities to set clear boundaries.

The value of strengthening their communication skills.

The importance of taking thoughtful and strategic action.

Course Objectives

Participants will also learn how to address these common situations:

Overcoming the fear of lost friendships and lost rapport

Disciplining a former peer

Managing coworkers who are older

Enforcing a policy the individual may have personally broken prior to becoming a manager

Avoiding the appearance of favoritism

Keeping confidential information confidential

Admitting mistakes in a way that builds trust and credibility with former peers (and all direct reports)

Session Materials & Requirements

    All necessary class materials will be provided.
  • Virtual Sessions:

o A functioning camera and microphone are required for participation.

  • Onsite Sessions:

o A valid photo ID is required upon check-in.

o Cafeteria service is not available at HSO. Limited “Market C” grab-and-go items are available; please arrange to bring your own lunch.

Cancellation, Refund, and Transfer Policy

  • Cancellations, refunds, or transfers must be completed no later than 10 business days before the class date.
  • Substitutions of attendees from the same company are permitted up to the morning of the class.

Pricing & Fees

  • Due to exchange rate complications, all pricing is in USD regardless of the class location.
  • Eventbrite fees include a charge of $0.99 per transaction plus a small credit card processing fee.
